Rather it comes to those who can keep it simple. Aggression though can be used to intimidate one's opponents, can seldom win them over. And... things get tricky when your only opponent is yourself.
Why am I writing this... you may ask... well... it is primarily because... I have just realized that I live and work in a hostile environment... and all of these hostilities seem so... only because I tend to view it that way.
Hence... there is a need to keep it simple... simple to solve the tough problems that lay ahead!
Being simple... also makes one humble... and humility is priceless when you are challenged.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------***

All this definitely does sound good... but what do I do if sarcasm and aggression are qualities that come naturally to me. And... from the pedestal where I stand now... I look around only to find fools. People whose sorry existence... ashames me, and it hurts to see that they simply fail to see the big picture.
Having made such a strong statement... I must add that although you may be convinced that I referring to real people around me... that is infact not the case. And... any such link if found should be deemed as a mere coincidence and nothing more. I say this... despite the fact that the conspiracy theorist in me... would always goad you to believe otherwise!

Men will pursue!!!

This is a comment I posted on a blog entry... for some reason, I felt that I had to write something. Not because I believe that MEN have some eternal right over WOMEN... but because Men behave the way they do for a reason. And it is essential for us to understand that reason; before we jump into conclusions, and go ahead and commit a character assassination.

The following is my complete comment with some minor edits... primarily done with the aim to protect the identity of the person who put up the original post. If I am allowed to publish the original post here, I shall put up a link here... but till a time that happens... you would have to bear with this!

Anyways... coming back to my point... Men would pursue no matter what... I
guess they are programmed to behave that way. I do understand that most of this
highly disturbing for you... or anyone for that matter... being pursued is not
the best thing that can happen... especially if it is something that you didn't
wish for!

Most men... do know when to stop... but that again is
extremely subjective.

Some give up the chase at the first major "NO"
sign. But when such a thing happens... men take a hard hit on their self esteem.
It is perhaps as if they feel they lost their chance at being the Alpha-Male.

Some others... take their chase to the very end... mostly their own end.
Such men are classic examples of what is socially accepted as a LOSER!

The more smarter men... give up the chase only to pick it up again at a
more opportune moment. In my opinion thats the best thing that could be done...
when things are not particularly conducive for the chase. And... personally I
would classify myself to belong to this league.

Perhaps you would also
agree to the same... :)

Adios....

I must also confess that the comment above is perhaps a stereotypical take on our society. Most such stereotypes are soon fading away as many of our social constructs that defined things around us; are becoming weaker. And whether or not this is to be appreciated can be debated upon... and for that I shall put up another post... once I have collected enough fodder to present my case. Till then... peace!!!

Relationships...

Boy meets Girl... and Girl meets Boy
And they...

Well... for the sake of this blog being rated PG-13, I shall not post the rest of that ballad here. Nevertheless I shall write what inspired it. Companionship although quiet fulfilling is perhaps the most scandalous of human endeavours. What's the big deal... you may wonder! But the fact remains that you may be be pretty relaxed about the whole idea of relationships... but folks around you... most of whom you really care about, get all hyper when they hear the Boy meets Girl story!

So... what does the Boy and Girl do when the seemingly innocous world that they live in with its values and codes of morality get hell bent on making them walk the line... much to their ire!

The strong and stupid ones take the fight to the next level... mostly with disastrous results. The weak and meek ones get subdued and forget that they ever met. But the smart ones lobby hard... play the mind game... make it seem like all of this was wished for by everyone... including the Big Brother... who has been watching all this while!

But... thats just half the battle won! The really challenge lies in honesty... not only towards one's significant other... but to oneself. When we get into this adventure... we are always foolishly idealistic... which is a good thing... for thats precisely what keeps us going. It is a life long rally that has to be kept alive stroke for stroke... without loosing a breath or skipping a beat... thats idealism for you! Till Death do us part... as is said by some of us who take the vows... for some others it transcends into their subsequent lives as well!

Having said that... I do believe relationships are really worth all the trouble one needs to go through for merely keeping it alive. It is worth it... every bit of it!

Strange....

It is indeed strange that it is always people whom you care have the potential to hurt you the most! Does that mean one should never ever care for anyone... well... caring for someone has its own advantages... you gain the slim chance of getting things done... that would normally never be done for you.

So... what is the solution...

One possibility is that you could choose to be a weasel... one with a slippery tongue. But here there is a potent risk... if the word gets out that you are an oppurtunistic bugger... it is very rare that you would get enough people to be nice to you.

The second possibility is to do it all yourself. To hell with the world around you... you do know that you came alone... and that you would leave alone... so why not lead a life in solitude? The arguement has weight... but is easier said than done. All of us are social creatures... we thrive on our contacts... and most of our ambitions rest solely on how we deal with others... a loner would be an eventual loser in such a world.

Numero trois: My favourite... stay focussed and be formal... two qualities of a weasel... and be nice and transparent to folks around. Honesty with a dash of cleverness can actually win so many hearts around you that you'd actually be excused for a heinious crime! Infact... you may do a bad deed... but the trick is to be one of the good guys.

So long!

I am stuck...

Have you ever tried to squeeze your way through a drain pipe and got stuck
in the process!?

If you have or haven't thats none of my concern... nevertheless thats precisely the way I feel now. Most motorists of the day... simply don't understand braking distance... and driving is all about speeding!

Agreed... speed is what gives the thrill to being on the road... but then again as rightly quoted on every driving license in the country... "Driving is a priviledge, not a right". It is quite surpising that we have all the right laws with us... and most of it is universally accepted in principle, yet there is so much of wrong around us.

So... the next time you decide to speed on the roads... make sure you know what it takes for your vehicle to stop... keep safe braking distance, and drive safely!

Hope, Belief and the Theory of Everything...

I know this would sound eerie... but I would like to propose this theory. I am of the opinion that everything in this world is related... in more ways than we can possibly imagine. And... most things... rather everything can be done or undone if enough people believe in it.

I witnessed a perfect example of this today.... as India is on the verge of loosing out the third test to Pakistan. The rot started yesterday when Pakistan put up a massive 500+ runs and laid the foundation of a massive lead. AK, a friend of mine, was the first to pronounce that we are going to loose. My reaction was quite rude and furious... I said that he should chop off his tongue!!!

And then at work... the only discussion in the cafetaria was how long we would be able to hold on... most of my colleagues had resigned to the fate that we are going to loose the match.

Then just after two wickets were down... AM another good friend of mine changed her nick on MSN... she added that only the rains can save the Indian team in Pakistan... or something that meant the same. I pinged her and cried foul... She took the hint and changed her nick... but I sensed that she too had resigned for the day.

At this moment... I could hear all alarm bells ringing... it became quite evident to me that we wanted to loose this match... though that was something I couldn't accept. Anyways... I reached out to my love... she is one of the few people who can work miracles for me. She said we could save the match... and I was thrilled... a draw was a miracle... and it was something I could settle for... but that was not to happen... as before I could even type a smiley... she blurted but then we might even loose! And that put me down... how could she do it... I could not believe what I was reading....

Anyways... so here is my theory... I believe that if a whole lot of us believe in something to happen... it would happen... we have lost nine wickets as I type this and Pakis are just a wicket away from victory. Yet the headline on rediff says Yuvraj hits 100!!! That is optimism... and I need it!

Conventional Wisdom... anyone!?

The world we live in, is soon becoming a scary place in more ways than we can imagine. People today lack the conventional wisdom or common sense that is actually responsible for all what we have gained during the time we have existed on this planet.

I was so disturbed to find out how effective our marketing strategies have been in brainwashing minds all over. For instance, if you know to use a computer, or you choose to work using one... you are deemed as intelligent... and actually admired or perhaps even worshipped by others for your 'mental prowess'. When in reality... computers are just dumb machines... or tools if you can call it that... and the only they do is to compute... being a computer user... is thus neither a sign of intelligence nor is it some kind of rocket-science that is beyond the scope of any ordirnary person! However the stereotypes we have in our society would force you to believe otherwise.

On a related note.... I received this forward from a distant friend... and it was just titled "Intelligence"... and contained some lewd riddles with seemingly double meaning answers... rather it was a like a story where a six year old from first standard wants to go over to the third standard... and is made to answer these riddles. And at the end of all that torture, the kid supposedly answers all the questions... and his teacher replies that he is so intelligent that he should join IIM-A!

And that was it... this is so horrible... ok... before I rant any further... I'd like to tell the un-initiated that IIM-A happens to be one of the premier business schools and perhaps also one of the most sought after business schools in the country. But what has that got to do with intelligence.... with all due respect to all those fine folks who have cracked the CAT and made it there... I fail to see the link.

And I also hate to see how stereotypes are corrupting and ruining our sense of conventional wisdom!

Like I care!?

I like the sound of those words... perhaps it is totally false... but it gives a notion of power. Not to be worried or concerned about something is an indication that thing cannot assert its power over me... and that makes me feel powerful. To be free again... is a sign of empowerment!

"Grow up, you foool! You cannot become powerful by shutting yourself off from the rest of the world" the loud voice screamed at me.

I looked around my cube... not to find anyone... "So it is you again!?" I whispered in contempt... "How I hate this voice"... I muttered under my breath.

"You cannot free yourself from me... You hear!" the voice screamed again!

"Yeah... yeah.... you say that all the time. But you never mean it!" now it was my turn to scream.

And then... it began to rain... I couldn't believe this... it was actually raining in my cube.... I stepped out of my cube to the still dry Street H... and walked out of the building... wondering... It was this farmer who gets this hen that lays golden eggs every day... eggs of pure gold... and quite obviously the farmer goes onto become very rich. However... his greed eventually gets to him... and he tears open the stomach in search for the source of all the infinite gold... and expectedly enough... finds nothing... ends up killing the hen, loosing the source of all his riches.

I guess the same applies to all of us in our lives... we are so taken in by greed that conservation never comes to us. And the funny thing is that we also do know that what we are doing is wrong... yet we don't learn!

I guess this has something to do with human nature... we always want more... and in our quest for more... we do such stupid things that we end up loosing everything. Or perhaps all of us think like Oscar Wilde is believed to have said or written...

"Moderation is a fatal thing. Can a person survive and flourish in solitude... or would one wither and die when forced to remain alone. Death is almost certain in solitude... I mean not all of us can be as lucky as Robinson Crusoe... or for that matter even he had Friday. And... most important of all that was fiction! Tom Hanks as Chuck Noland in Cast Away was more closer to the real world... and there again... his character returns to civilization as we know it! (I have always missed the finale of this movie whenever it got aired on television, hence I am not exactly sure if quoting it here would be apt to prove my point... if at all there exists one!!!)

Anyways... what I want to say is that most of us who live in densely populated urban areas are still very much alone in our very private worlds... so... what happens to such people! Who are connected yet disconnected in many essential ways... do they become anti-social and thoroughly incapable of even a simply conversation!? Or do they become hyper-active and paranoid and write blogs such as this one!!??

'Tis that time of the year again...

It is that time of the year again... a time ripe for making resolutions... ok sorry to sound cliched... and I know my spelling sucks... but this is the best i can do rite now.

Only one major resolution for the year ahead... keep a low profile... don't speak unless spoken to... or speak only if there is a specific tangible benefit attached to my speaking.

This resolution is aimed at me learning to find happiness on my own... without me having to depend on others to reach there. As much as I hate to admit this, I think it is true. All of us have this natural tendency to know more and find out as much as possible about the lives of some of the people we come across... and at times... this urge takes us to heights of lunacy.

Ok... before I proceed any further let me reiterate the disclaimer... whatever can be read in the above few lines has no relation whatsoever to any person living or dead, and the instances quoted are purely a figment of my imagination. Any relation that might seem obvious should be deemed as a mere coincidence and nothing more!

I am not very good at spewing out legal terms... and that is the best I can do!

Over to the point, I wish to make... if it is to believed that blogs are best read when they are from people you know... should that translate into a practice where one reads only blogs of those people who take you into confidence. I am sorry I cannot at this time come up with a better word. This post... is different from any of my previous posts... primarily because I am not thinking while I am typing this. It is all free flow!!!

Ok... coming back to the Indian Blogosphere... if such a thing does exist... in my opinion it doesn't... well we may have a few thousand regular bloggers.... or people who claim to or actually maintain a blog... but... anyways... I did check up Mr.Sabnis' blog... and my instant reaction was... the fellow has bad taste!!!

I do understand that today... the issue has been blown out of all proportions... IIPM students doing a dharna outside IBM... I mean... "HELLO!!!!" what has this world come to... ok... if this piece of information is gibberish... I hope it is... anyways... the point I wanna make is that... hmmm... "freedom of speech" comes with a lot of responsibility... and most folks who tout themselves as champions of the same, have no clue whatsoever what they are talking about. We live in a messy world... where shit happens all the time... and its ok!

Oh... and here's the MOW (short for Message of the Week). I would be starting off a new blog very soon. It is going to be a sort of political commentary... and I shall post a URL here as soon as it is up!

Bangalored!!!

I came across this term the other day. (Ok... pun apart) "Bangalored" refers to American jobs that are outsourced or off-shored to low cost locations such as Bangalore,India.

Hence now you have the phrase.... I have been reading Arun Shourie's book called the "Secular Agenda"... wherein he brings forth several crucial and contorversial concerns ranging from India's sense of nationalism to the so-called secularism that is preached and practiced in the country.

He pointed out an interesting fact... to which I have no answer as yet!

In India... administration of all large Hindu temples are assisted by IAS officers... who are basically well trained and thouroughly equipped to handle large organizations. Most important of all... they are accountable to the constitution and any misdeeds can actually be challenged at the courts. Whereas.... when it comes to administrating mosques the government has given all rights and powers to the Waqf board. This is perhaps done out of concern for Indian Muslims as a minority community. This total disregard of regulation and control makes room exploitation and missappropriation of funds that are actually meant to serve the community. Shourie brings forth the question... that don't Muslims as Indian citizens have a right to efficient governance of their places of worship??

I have been thinking over this... and I believe that they do... but then... if a government takes such a step... would it considered as an act against minority rights??

Reportage

Isn't it ironic that we believe everything that gets featured in the news to be true. It is not that I hate the Americans... but I am wary of a cultural invasion which could destroy our sense of identity.

We as Indians may not have the best living standards in the world... but we have inherited a very rich and vibrant heritage... which I believe is almost priceless... and deserves to be defended at all costs.

I feel there is a need for our mass-media to stop aping the west... and tweak their reportage to suit Indian tastes. So... what do I do... go to the nearest store... to buy a bottle of drinking water. Surprised!? Don't be! I spend Rs.12 for every litre of drinking water. I live in Noida, which has been touted as one of India's "Dream Cities" and a hotspot for the new age IT-Driven economy. Point being... if you consider my location, and my occupation, I would be counted among India's affluent populace... those who have enough buying power to sustain a comfortable lifestyle. But the harsh truth is that you do not get potable drinking water in Noida. What do people do... they have no choice but to buy drinking water.... and the cost of this water varies from Rs12 for 1 litre to Rs50 for a 25 litre casket. And average household would thus spend anything between Rs.3000 to Rs.20,000 on potable water alone. Such is the case with those who can afford to pay... what about the rest?? What do they do?? Consume the toxic sludge and suffer!? And water is supposed to be a resource that is so essential to life that it should be freely available.

What irks me even more... is that when we have such a major crunch for water... and water is actually a luxury... we actually low soft-drink manufacturer's such Coke, Pepsi etc to exploit our water resources and resell us the same water at an astronomical price!!!!

Why do we tolerate this?

"Indian-run global cyber drugstore busted in US" screams the headlines of HT... supposedly the newspaper (if you wish to call it that) that according to them, Indians are to look forward for news. Bah!

The front page, which carries an article with the aforementioned headline... claims that the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) arrested a physician based in Agra for the alleged sale of controlled drugs. These drugs also include Viagra among others. The crime... a physician in Agra sells these drugs to other retailers, and all of these purchases could be made with just a valid credit card.

There are two things that disturbed me the most.... firstly what right does the US DEA have to arrest a person from Agra?

Secondly, why is this news item, supposedly penned by some "S Rajagopalan" from Washington, on the front page of the Hindustan Times?

All of this stinks of a bullying act by the U.S of A on nations that have a competitive advantage
over them when it comes to a world of free trade!

Whats more... this also is a classic case of "India-Bashing" which of late has become the favourite pastime of the English language media in the country.

Civilization under threat!

I was apalled by a recent article that featured on the front page of the Hindustan Times (a newspaper worse than the "Slimes of India"). Infact it was only the HT that chose to put up this article... and that in itself speaks volumes of its derogatory nature.

The Article quoted that a Supreme Court Bench ( the judges weren't named) sought the Government at the Centre and Government of Delhi to review Article 377 of the Constitution. Further the article went onto inform that Article 377 is the law that makes homosexuality illegal in the country.

The Supreme Court was acting under a litigation (I have no idea if it was a Public Interest Litigation... for I see no public interest in this) filed by the Naz Foundation.

Now... I think... the Naz Foundation despite what it does for people who are HIV+ or who suffer from AIDS, should be banned in the country for it stand up for the rights of homosexuals. Also... the Supreme Court Judges who dared to attack our civilization must be forced to retire... and they shouldn't be given any privileges whatsoever that are otherwise reserved for retired judges. Also... we need a law rather a sub-clause to Article 377 allowing the law enforcement agencies to curb any mention of this in the mass media. What I mean is ceritificates awarded to movies such as Fire, Page 3, Kal Ho Na Ho, My Brother Nikhil should be withdrawn until the makers of these movies approve off cutting the objectionable scenes.

The Ethical Guide to Stalking....

"Stalking" according to the Merriam Webster's Online Dictionary (which happens to be one of the most easily accessible online dictionaries and my favourite) would be as follows::

Main Entry: stalk
Function: verb
Etymology: Middle English, from Old English bestealcian; akin to Old English stelan to steal -- more at STEAL
intransitive senses
1 : to pursue quarry or prey stealthily
2 : to walk stiffly or haughtily
transitive senses
1 : to pursue by stalking
2 : to go through (an area) in search of prey or quarry <stalk the woods for deer>
- stalk·er noun

To pursue, quarry or to prey stealthily... that's all it is about... to prey with stealth! Thus in order to be a really successful and good at stalking... you simply cannot afford to alarm or hurt your victim... (or to put it more subtly... the person you wish to stalk). Infact... after a perfect stalk your victim would be really grateful to you.

So... how does one go about this?

First and foremost... you should never loose your self-respect. To ensure this... it is important that you condition yourself not to do anything that doesn't come naturally to you. This consistency in behaviour is essential to maintain your self-respect.

It is also important remember that stalking is not a race. You are never in a hurry... and that there would always be another day, and another oppurtunity. I suppose this attitude would go a long way in improving your chances of success... for in the event of a possible failure of a plan... you abort the mission before you fail.

Third and needless to say.... for this is one thing that every stalker does. Know your victim... know everything about them... you cannot stalk a person unless you have encyclopaeidia-like knowledge about them. But then again... it is also important to understand the mind of your victim.... and here is where most stalkers fail. They never care to understand their victims.

Finally... the most toughest task.... you need to be useful to your victim. The most successful stalkers get their victims to actually miss them... when they are not around. This is easier said than done... and probably requires infinite patience, and resources and even luck!

Thats all for the moment... enjoy stalking!!!

Who am I?

This I believe is question that struck most of us, and is perhaps refered to as "Identity Crisis" by some. I feel rather awkward that the only language I can use to convey my thoughts, ideas and emotions in an appreciable manner is 'English'. But then again... I'm not really bothered about that. What bothers me is the fact that English is alien to our culture, our traditions, and our beliefs. And of late... I have come to believe that the more I try to improve my skills in the English language... I grow further away from my roots.

But then again... is English really alien to India? The British are responsible for creating this nation. Rather it has been their misdeeds that created India, what I mean is that they were here on an imperial conquest, to loot and to plunder. It has been almost six decades since they left... but we are still colonized in spirit. You need an English language education to truly flourish in this country.

But then again... Is it fair to blame English for our failings as a nation... after all it is only the English language that unites all of us as Indians!

PiSEA!

Peace In South East Asia... thats the online project I intend to start. Though I have done a bit of thinking and this regard... and even launched a project of the same name at TIG (www.takingitglobal.org), things really didn't take off partly because I lost focus and more importantly because I was lazy.

Anyways... now I wish to restart it... with a primary focus of understanding our relations with our neighbouring countries... and in the process figuring out ways that we can actually maintain peace and our interests as a nation!

You could find details on what I did at the following link...
http://projects.takingitglobal.org/PiSEA
Suggestions and views are most welcome... please use "COMMENTS" for the same.

Addicted!

I find myself truly and absolutely addicted to the Internet... and recently had a bad taste of could happen if I am deprived access!

Due to a technical fault, system adminstrators at work were unable to hook us up to the Internet for two whole days. And... as that happened I came to realize that how totally dependent I am on the Internet.

Day One was really tough... I left work as early as 8:45PM... which really early considering that I usually stay up till 11. And as I did that I rushed straight to a cyber cafe... and even got my girlfriend to sign up on Yahoo... and I came back to my normal self only after we had chatted for two whole hours.

Day Two was reasonably ok... though I felt miserable for I had to postpone a lot of my work due to not being able to using my email! However that didn't turn out to be much of a regret as by late evening we had our mail server back in action! But access in the truest sense of the word was not quite there!

My Blog...

I was all excited with the idea of creating my own blog. But now... when I have finally done it... and am about to put up my very first post... I am clueless as to what I should say! Strange... isn't it?

Anyways... for sake of the few people who care about me and would actually bother to read this... and for those strangers who were bored enough to visit the page... I'll say something... which I hope would be worth the effort required in typing out the blog address which is "http://vekspace.blogspot.com" and hitting the return key. Or click one of the few links that actually lead to this page.

One of the many reasons why chose to write this blog was a blogging community I found while surfing aimlessly through the dark alleys of the Internet. For sake of privacy... I shall not name this community... but the fact that a group of strangers could share such camaraderie while still remaining strangers inspired me to write a blog!

That is about all for the moment... watch this space for more!!!
